Azarias Smith

12/17/1742-9/23/1783 Born in Lebanon, Connecticut. Worked as a household helper in 1763. Came from Christian Spring on 19 June 1767 as helper to Br. Ziegler. Married Sister Elizabeth Ashley 5 Nov 1782. On 15 Sep 1783 he suffered a fall from a horse. He was returned to Nazareth on the 16th by the Brethren, and, having seen his elderly father who had come from Gnaddenhutten, died at 10 p.m. on the 23rd, his wife singing hymns to him. His funeral and burial were held on the 25th of September. She gave birth to a still-born son in March of 1784, so he had no children. He was named after his father, Azariah Smith of the Sichem-in-the-Oblong congregation in Dutchess Co., New York, but amongst the German-speaking brethren his name was spelled Azarias in the German fashion, and so it appears on his headstone. (5 July 1763, 19 Sep 1764: Minutes of the Single Brethren's Conference, 1762-1766, BethSB 10, MAB).
