Peter Rice, the son of Owen Rice, arrives in Christiansbrunn on September 27, 1757, with fifteen other boys; he begins to be trained as a tailor. In early 1759 he is working as a woodcutter. When Andreas Albrecht arrives in Christiansbrunn in August 1759, Rice is reassigned to him to be trained as a gunstocker. Rice is admitted to Holy Communion at Christiansbrunn on June 7, 1760. In 1762, he moves from Gnadenthal to Bethlehem to learn the trade of organ building from David Tannenberg.
